Jalen Carter, Georgia

Explosiveness: Carter displays incredible explosive skills coming out of his stance that allows him to threaten the edges of his opponents. He has enough quickness to expertly penetrate gaps in run defense while maintaining a consistent pad level throughout the down.

Pad Level/Leverage: Carter has average height for the position so he can maintain his pad level much easier than some of his counterparts. As for leverage, his pad level gives him an advantage here however his lower half and core strength is what sets him apart. Carter plays stout at the point of attack and is hard to move for an attacking three-technique.

Pass Rush Plan: Carter has a much better pass rush plan than one would expect for a player his age. He plays with the staples of interior pass rush by hitting his opponents with power to supplant them. However, Carter can also win with club rip and arm over moves that he uses when working against slower guards that he can easily defeat with his short-area quickness. Carter could still grow here in regards to counters but can consistently win at his current level in terms of body control.

Run Defense: Carter displays incredible run defense due to his low pad level, function speed, and strength overall. He has an incredible first step which allows him to immediately get into the pads of his opponents while also shooting gaps with ease. He could clean up some of his run diagnoses but handles misdirection well enough due to his high-level athletic traits.

Versatility: Carter was deployed from a few different alignments despite playing in a crowded defensive tackle room. He’s a three-technique through and through, however, Georgia deployed him at shade nose, one technique and in some situations as a five-technique.

Strength/Power: Carter displays great strength and power for a defensive lineman. He can win with bull rushes on pass downs while also gaining leverage against offensive linemen in the run game. He can be physical when locking out and shedding offensive lineman but can struggle to properly handle double teams.

Block Shedding: Carter displays good hand force when engaging with his opponents, getting forceful punches that allows him to pull off counters and shed for advancement. He can hit his opponents with the club rip consistently and use his explosiveness to power through gaps.

Hand Usage: Carter stays consistent with his hand placement but his accuracy can run a bit wide in quick game moments when can’t get set right away. His hand force and athleticism allow him to work around some of the placement issues but has little trouble redirecting offensive linemen to affect the run game.

Flexibility: Displays benchmark flexibility and functional athleticism for the position. This is most evident when he rushes through the A gap en route to the quarterback on pass downs, as he can loop around his opponents after his initial rush move. Additionally, Carter has above average change of direction skills which is a result of his flexibility to stay light in space.

Gap Shooting: Carter is an excellent gap penetrator due to his length, explosiveness, and power with his hands. Carter has little trouble effecting zone blocks as he can use his short-area quickness to beat his opponents to the spot.
