The graph shows that Allen did improve, but not by much. His PFF Grade slightly decreased (65.3 to 64.2), his QBR dropped (49.8 to 49.4), but his EPA increased (-0.02 to 0.01), and his CPOE increased (-5.23 to -1.30).
There were calls for Josh Allen to be replaced or at least the thoughts to start the process and you can see why. Looking at a combined view of 2018 and 2019 in one graph, it is clear that Josh Allen wasn’t good enough. Allen ranked 29th out of 36 on EPA/Dropback (0.00) during those two years and 35th out of 36 on CPOE (-2.96).
Unfortunately (well now potentially, fortunately), the Bills were not in a position to draft a QB. The Bills had the #22 pick (the Bills traded for Stefan Diggs instead), with the only QB on the board there being Jordan Love and Jalen Hurts.
2020 – The Breakout Year:
The breakout year is truly one of the best seasons in recent years. According to EPA, only three players have had a better single-season; Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes (twice), and Aaron Rodgers since Allen entered the league.
