Darnell Wright, Tennessee

Pass Protection:  Wright pops out of his stance quickly and into his pass sets. He understands angles and how to combat counter moves. He covers plenty of ground in his kickslide. His feet don’t stop moving and he stays square with his matchup. He either can stonewall the rusher or angle them out of the play, so he has a multitude of ways to win pass protection reps.

Balance: Wright can be prone to over extending, more often than not when climbing to the second level or on cut blocks. If he overextends and misses, he ends up on the ground more often than you would like.

Hand Placement: Since Wright is good at staying square with his matchup, his hand placement is largely positive. He can be prone to holding calls when the defender gets the advantage on him with a counter or beats him off the snap.

Football IQ:  Wright’s able to identify defensive pre-snap audibles and adjust accordingly and understands when to climb, seal or cut.

Power:  Wright possesses a powerful initial punch that sets his matchup back when in pass sets. In the run game, Wright can drive the defender back for as long as he wants. Going forward, I’d like to see Wright develop more of a finishing mentality, too often he ends reps or matchups by shoving or pushing at the defender rather than driving them into the dirt.

Anchor: Wright plays with a naturally wide base and stays square to meet oncoming defenders and absorb the contact. He has great anchor integrity and core strength that allows him to stay low. As a result, he doesn’t lose leverage battles all that often.

Flexibility: Wright has decent flexibility for his size (6’6 335). He’s able to unlock his hips and move vertically or laterally without looking out of place or lumbering.

Versatility: Wright has played a season’s worth of games at both tackle spots as well as started two games at right guard. On film, he looks to have the arm length to stick at tackle, if he doesn’t, he at least has experience inside.

Movement Skills: Wright moves well in space without lumbering. He can be used on pull blocks where he kicks from tackle and is the lead blocker up the middle and has enough lateral agility to be used out in the flats as a lead blocker on screens. While I wouldn’t label him an elite athlete, he’s good enough athletically for his size.

Footwork/Foot Speed: Wright’s footwork and foot speed are solid and consistent.
