The Texas A&m football team is spiraling right now. They are coming off their sixth consecutive loss after losing to an Auburn football team who just rolled out a new coach, in Cadillac Williams. The Aggies now sit at 3-7 overall and they are 1-6 in conference play.
Now a record like this would surely lead to termination for any coach of a powerhouse program, right? Well not necessarily, not if you have a contract like Jimbo does. It would cost the Aggies 86,000,000 (yes 86 MILLION) if they were to fire Jimbo today. That contract and the fact he just brought in the number 1 recruiting class in the nation to College Station are the only reasons why he is still employed (in my eyes). 86 million is quite the price tag, but let’s not pretend that boosters for a school like Texas A&M can’t organize something to make a significant dent in that fund. Recruiting is the main reason he is still employed in my opinion.
In a new age of NIL deals being available to collegiate athletes across America, Jimbo decided to adapt to the change and not lash out in jealousy of others’ success. With this new age came a new recruiting class and Jimbo was able to secure the number 1 class, topping Nick Saban.
Not only was Jimbo able to bring in the number 1 class, he is getting these top recruits on the field. We have already seen significant contributions from the likes of Evan Stewart (5 star, number 2 receiver, number 11 player nationally), Walter Nolan (5 star, number 1 DL and number 2 player nationally) Shemar Stewart (5 star, number 3 DL, number 9 player nationally), Conner Weigman ( 5 star, number 2 QB, 22 player nationally), Jacoby Mathews (4 star, number 2 safety, number 39 player nationally) and many more.
It’s the keeping the players in check and play calling that is becoming the residual issue with Texas A&M.
Around 10 different players have received discipline from the program. There were four freshmen who were suspended for breaking curfew, three more were suspended for vaping in the team’s locker room. And there were rumors of other instances. Now let’s talk about the play calling. It is historically bad. The Aggies rank
108th in scoring (only crossing 30 once this season, against Sam Houston)
68th in passing yards
78th in passing touchdowns
60th in yards per rush
87th in first downs
111th in completion percentage
This is out of all FBS teams (131).
Now I am not personally sold on the idea of moving on from Jimbo completely, I just want him to give up play-calling duties. Too many times he is seen on the sideline digging through his plethora of play-calling sheets and is forced to burn a timeout.
Luckily this dilemma of needing a new play caller is coming out around an ideal time in college football. There have been a number of resurgences from old powerhouses, who are now playing exciting football again (along with some new faces altogether). I have put together my list of ideal offensive coordinators I would like to see the Aggies tied to and a number of them can come in as a head coach (if the Aggies move on from Jimbo) or just come in as the new play caller.
