Southern OT Ja'Tyre Carter showcases impressive footwork, short area quickness at NFL Combine

As one of four players representing HBCU’s (Historically Black Collège and Universities) Southern offensive tackle Ja’Tyre Carter entered today’s combine as a player who showed natural power and road-grading ability at the FCS level.

Just a few weeks before the Senior Bowl, Carter was a late add to the roster and held his own against early round players like Logan Hall and Perion Winfrey in the one on one sessions. It would translate over to the team sessions as well, sealing lanes on outside zones runs, showing off some versatility to work at both guard and tackle. One of his more impressive reps of the week in Mobile was initially getting beat off the ball by Travis Jones, the UConn stud, spinning back and somehow recovering before Jones closed on the imaginary quarterback.

The tape shows an athletic player who is light on his feet and can handle both speed and power rushers. In fact, Carter graded out as one of the top pass protectors in all of Division I football according to PFF’s metrics, and the film backs up a reliable player who understands how to cut off angles of opposing pass rushers, replaces his hands and finishes in dominant positions.
