Zion Nelson, OT, Miami: Scouting Report

Height: 6’5’’

Weight: 316 pounds

Year: Junior

Games Watched: Oklahoma State (2020), Florida State (2020), Pittsburgh (2020)

————————————————————————————————————————————————————

Pass Protection: Extremely quality in pass protection. Smooth and patient in the trenches. Keeps his head on a swivel, always looking for work. Didn’t give up a sack in 2020 with the Miami Hurricanes.

Run Blocking: He succeeds in this phase by properly utilizing his strength to turn defenders’ backs towards the sidelines, creating wide holes for his offensive backfield. You can trust him to make those crucial blocks in space at the second level. Tenacious in pursuit of his assignments.

Balance: Nelson’s biggest weakness. On film, he was seen on the turf much more than one would like. Defenders knock him off his base easily with pull moves, sending Nelson tumbling to the ground. He needs to work on controlling his massive frame.

Hand Usage: Active and heavy hands. Effectively displays a plethora of techniques such as his snatch and one-hand strike. Takes advantage of his length to make contact. Could certainly be more consistent with his initial hand placement.

Football IQ: He obtains great awareness; knows when and when not to pick up blitzes. Stays on his man in stunt and high traffic situations.

Power: Utilizes raw power at the point of attack to gain leverage. Obtains tremendous leg drive to push defenders out of play. Demonstrates exceptional strength as he holds defenders stagnant when he gets his mittens on them.

Anchor: Great anchor ability at the perimeter. Maintains his ground against bull rushes and double-teams.

Flexibility: Highly flexible for his size. Nelson is able to quickly redirect his hips. Bends well at the knees for maximum impact when he engages.

Mobility: Very athletic, especially considering his stature. Possesses the speed to recover and regain control when beat. Does struggle to consistently get square with more agile defenders. Nelson can quickly gain depth to counter speed-rushers attempting to run the arc.

Footwork: Nelson’s feet are one of his top traits; they’re crisp, fluid, and nonstop. Keeps his feet active after initial contact to overpower rushers and open holes. Hardly ever loses that first step.

Total: 84.5/100 – Early Second Round Grade
