Tyler Steen, Alabama

Pass Protection: Steen has an adequate kick slide that covers solid ground, however, he can struggle against bendier rushers. He lacks the consistent ability to shift his weight onto a rusher and turn the corner. He has a tendency to overextend on pass rush reps, which led to his form being thrown out of whack. Hopefully, a year in the Alabama offensive line coaching system will help fix some of the flaws evident from his time with Vandy.

Balance: Overextends at times and can also be susceptible to having his head over his toes. When this happens, rushers and defenders can shift their weight or hit Steen with a counter, resulting in him on the ground.

Hand Placement: Has solid initial hand placement and knows how to use his hands to combat counter moves. Occasional issues with placement being outside the numbers or even around the side of the opposing rusher. Needs to improve when it comes to rushers bending the corner.

Power: Doesn’t possess enough functional power in his game. At 6’5 315, he doesn’t pop defenders off the snap all that often and isn’t much of a force in the run game.

Football IQ: Steen is good at recognizing load blitzes and stunts. He’s able to recognize when to pass off his block to his left guard and when not to. Steen has the occasional moment where his lack of commitment to finishing a block leads directly to his matchup making the stop. Lapses in judgment aren’t going to be acceptable at Alabama, let alone the next level.

Anchor: Lack of a solid anchor leads to the balance issues that Steen has. Doesn’t sink his hips and drive in the run game. Against the pass, he can stand.

Flexibility: Has decent ankle flexibility but is a little stiff in the hips. Working with the Tide should help him work around some of his athletic limitations.

Versatility: At Vanderbilt, Steen was a starter at both left tackle and right tackle. He’s got the size profile that he could kick inside if his functional strength improves.

Movement Skills: Steen’s lateral movement is above average. He seems like he’s overthinking his movements at times. Being looser with his movement skills would help with his development.

Footwork/Foot Speed: More consistency in his footwork would improve his kick slide and as a result his pass protection.
